The Milwaukee Brewers placed right-hander Logan Henderson on the 15-day injured list with a low back strain, retroactive to May 23. In a corresponding move, the team recalled right-handed reliever Coleman Crow from Triple-A Nashville.
Henderson’s placement on the IL adds to his injury troubles and limits his opportunity for consistent big league starts. The 26-year-old has posted a 2.23 ERA, a 33.3% strikeout rate, and a 7.4% walk rate across 10 major league starts. However, injuries and roster constraints have kept him from securing a consistent spot in the rotation.
Henderson initially made four strong starts in April and May of last year but was sent back to the minors in June due to roster decisions. He returned in August before elbow inflammation landed him on the IL for the rest of the season. This year, he started buried on the depth chart but got a chance when Quinn Priester and Brandon Woodruff were injured. Now, Henderson joins them on the IL.
With the rotation shorthanded, manager Pat Murphy said Crow won’t start until Friday. The Brewers may deploy a bullpen game on Wednesday before the off-day on Thursday. Kyle Harrison is set to start tonight, followed by Crow on Wednesday. Brandon Sproat and Jacob Misiorowski will start on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Priester is currently on a rehab assignment and will pitch three innings in his next rehab appearance. Woodruff, out since the start of the month with shoulder inflammation, will attempt a four-inning live batting practice session next week. Until then, the Brewers will have to manage with their current pitching depth.
The team has a few options to consider. Chad Patrick, who was moved to the bullpen, has pitched four innings as recently as May 16. Shane Drohan has logged three innings in relief, while Aaron Ashby, DL Hall, Carlos Rodriguez, and Jake Woodford have provided two-inning stints and could offer more.
The Brewers will have a busy stretch of 13 consecutive games beginning Friday. They’ll need to navigate this period with a limited rotation while awaiting the return of key starters.
