The St. Louis Cardinals are adjusting their starting rotation by promoting Hunter Dobbins to a traditional starter and temporarily adopting a six-man rotation. Dobbins will make his first regular start since joining the club, while the move is expected to help ease his return to starting after recent surgery and provide more rest for the rest of the staff during a grueling stretch of the schedule.
Dobbins, who was recalled from the minors last week, has previously worked as a bulk reliever in two appearances. He most recently pitched five scoreless innings in relief of Kyle Leahy on Friday, earning the win. Dobbins started 11 of his 13 appearances for the Red Sox last season and has started all but three of his career minor league games. His long-term role appears in the rotation, and the six-man setup will help manage his workload as he recovers from right ACL reconstructive surgery.
The Cardinals' rotation has been healthy in 2026, with starters like Dustin May, Matthew Liberatore, Michael McGreevy, Andre Pallante, and Leahy each logging at least 12 starts. However, May has a history of injuries, including a lost 2024 season due to flexor tendon surgery and elbow neuritis in 2025. With 32 games in 34 days coming up before the All-Star break, the six-man rotation could help keep the group fresh.
Performance is another concern. Liberatore has a 4.48 ERA but an expected ERA over 5.00. McGreevy's 2.98 ERA is nearly three runs below his 5.68 xERA. Leahy's expected ERA is over 6.50, while May's 4.59 ERA is higher than his 3.36 FIP, suggesting some regression may be coming. Pallante is the only starter who has matched his expected ERA with his actual performance.
The six-man rotation is likely temporary. The Cardinals will have more frequent off-days in late July and August, which may allow them to return to a five-man setup. For now, the team is prioritizing health and performance in a key stretch of the season. St. Louis is second in the NL Central and holds the top NL Wild Card spot, but its pitching staff ranks 20th in the majors by fWAR.
In other news, rehabbing infielder Ramón Urías is dealing with a left elbow issue, per Brenden Schaeffer of MLB.com. Urías was previously on the 15-day injured list with right elbow lateral epicondylitis and now faces an extended absence pending further evaluation. He struggled with a .158/.279/.316 line in 68 plate appearances before his injury, though he posted an 87 wRC+ in 2025.
Urías' absence complicates the Cardinals' backup infield plans. José Fermín can play the infield but has been used mostly in left field. Bryan Torres, with three remaining options, could be sent down if needed. That would leave Urías as the top backup infielder when he returns, with Fermín and out-of-options Nelson Velázquez covering the outfield.
The Cardinals will continue their six-man rotation through at least the next homestand, with Dobbins set to start on Saturday against the Brewers.
