The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring and selected the contract of prospect Tommy Troy. The move comes as the team looks to inject more offense into its lineup after Gurriel struggled through his worst season as a major league hitter.
Gurriel, 32, has posted a .228/.284/.304 batting line with a single home run in 102 plate appearances this season, translating to a 66 wRC+, well below league average. His struggles have been consistent with last year’s performance, when he hit for a 95 wRC+ but saw his average exit velocity drop to 87.8 mph, down from 88.4 mph in 2024. This year, his exit velocity is even lower at 87.5 mph.
Manager Torey Lovullo said that Gurriel’s injury is minor and that the team hopes to have him back as soon as he’s eligible off the IL. The timing of the injury is a setback for Arizona, which relies heavily on a top-heavy offense led by Corbin Carroll (161 wRC+), Ildemaro Vargas (136 wRC+), and Nolan Arenado (132 wRC+). Meanwhile, Gurriel has been one of the team’s worst regulars both at the plate and defensively.
Tommy Troy is set to make his major league debut after being called up from Triple-A. Troy, Arizona’s first-round pick in 2023 and ranked as their No. 4 prospect by MLB.com, batted .307/.397/.449 in 205 plate appearances this season, good for a 109 wRC+. While his strikeout rate has risen to 24.4%, his offensive profile and defensive versatility make him a valuable option.
Troy has primarily played the outfield in recent months, logging 219 innings there compared to 162 at second base. His speed and defensive flexibility could help the Diamondbacks as they experiment with options behind Ketel Marte and Geraldo Perdomo. This promotion could also serve as a trial run for Troy’s future in the outfield.
With Gurriel on the IL, the Diamondbacks have room to evaluate Troy’s MLB readiness. Backup outfielders Tim Tawa and Jorge Barrosa are on the roster, but neither has shown consistent production. Tawa has two remaining option years, giving Arizona flexibility if Troy earns a spot.
The Diamondbacks will look to build on a recent offensive surge as they face the Rockies in a key division matchup. Troy could make his debut as soon as tonight’s game.

The Toronto Blue Jays are counting on Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber to provide much-needed stability in their starting rotation as the season progresses. Scherzer, 41, is expected to return from the injured list in early to mid-June after a rehab assignment. Bieber, also on the IL, will begin a reha
