The Arizona Diamondbacks have reinstated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. from the 10-day injured list and designated first baseman Luken Baker for assignment. Gurriel returns after recovering from a torn right ACL suffered on September 1, while Baker, who has appeared in only three games this season, now faces an uncertain future with the team.
Gurriel’s return comes ahead of schedule. Most ACL injuries require 9–10 months of recovery, yet he has made a rapid comeback, completing just two games in a minor league rehab assignment before earning his promotion. Manager Torey Lovullo suggested Gurriel could start as early as the weekend, potentially playing regular innings in left field without the need for frequent DH appearances.
Arizona selected Baker’s contract in April to provide depth at first base, but the position has been anything but clear this season. Pavin Smith was placed on the IL due to elbow surgery, and Carlos Santana missed time with an adductor strain. Despite Baker’s selection, he has only seen five plate appearances. Instead, Jose Fernandez and Ildemaro Vargas have stepped up, sharing first base and DH duties.
Baker’s potential DFA was widely expected. He signed with Arizona on a minor league contract in December and was originally considered for a platoon with Smith. That plan unraveled as the Diamondbacks shifted their approach, ultimately favoring more versatile options. Baker is now exposed to waivers and could choose free agency if he clears, as he has a prior outright assignment from his time with the Dodgers.
During his three seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, Baker hit .206/.317/.338 with four home runs in 189 plate appearances. His lack of defensive versatility and limited power at the major league level have made it difficult to find a consistent role. However, he has produced strong numbers at Triple-A, making him a potential depth piece for another organization.
The Diamondbacks now have a clearer picture at first base with Fernandez and Vargas handling the workload. If Baker is claimed on waivers, it could open up roster flexibility for Arizona as the season winds down. If he is released, Baker will have the option to become a free agent.
The team has until 5:00 PM MST Monday to make a decision on Baker’s assignment.
