Chicago White Sox second-year catcher Kyle Teel will miss at least three weeks after suffering a lateral collateral ligament (LCL) sprain in his right knee during a rehab game with Triple-A Charlotte. The injury comes at an inopportune time for a White Sox team already juggling injuries and a rebuilding pitching staff.
Manager Will Venable confirmed that Teel’s injury occurred when his cleat got stuck during a swing. This follows a prior setback when Teel sustained a Grade 2 strain of his right hamstring while representing Italy in the World Baseball Classic. The timing is particularly frustrating for a Sox team that has exceeded expectations this season.
The White Sox enter a key series in Seattle with a 24-22 record, placing them in the AL Wild Card conversation and just one game behind Cleveland in the AL Central. Despite a weak pitching staff, Chicago’s offense has been a bright spot, ranking tenth in runs scored and among the league’s top half in on-base percentage and slugging. Only the Yankees have hit more home runs than the Sox’s 66.
Teel was expected to be a key contributor in the lineup, having posted a .273/.375/.411 slash line over his first 78 major league games. His absence will likely delay his impact at the MLB level, with the earliest possible return date now set for late June.
In the interim, the White Sox have relied on a catching tandem of Drew Romo and Edgar Quero. Romo, who entered the season with limited MLB experience, has hit four home runs in 13 games since replacing Reese McGuire as the backup catcher. Quero, meanwhile, has struggled overall but did hit a walk-off homer against the Cubs.
The White Sox could place Teel on the 60-day injured list if they need to free up a 40-man roster spot. That move would backdate to Opening Day and is expected to happen at some point in June. With Teel sidelined, Romo and Quero remain the only healthy catchers on the 40-man roster.
The White Sox will continue their series in Seattle, aiming to maintain their Wild Card positioning while managing a thin catching situation. Teel’s rehab progress will be monitored closely, with a return to game action expected in late June at the earliest.
