The American League MVP race is in full swing after a thrilling three-game series between the Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros. Bobby Witt Jr. and Yordan Alvarez delivered standout performances in Kansas City, fueling the debate over who deserves the top individual honor this season. Witt tallied six hits including two doubles and two stolen bases, while Alvarez went 7-for-14 with two home runs and extended his on-base streak to 21 games.
Witt has consistently been in the MVP conversation since his breakout season in 2023. He finished seventh in 2023 and second to Aaron Judge in 2024, earning all 30 second-place votes. By Baseball Reference’s Wins Above Replacement (fWAR), Witt ranks third in the AL behind only Shohei Ohtani and Judge. On FanGraphs, he trails only Ohtani.
Alvarez has a rich history in MVP races, having been the AL Rookie of the Year in 2019 and a key player in the 2022 MVP battle between Judge and Ohtani. This season, he’s leading the AL with 24 home runs, 54 RBI, and a .326 batting average. His 193 wRC+ is the second-highest in the Statcast era, behind only Judge’s 2024 season, and puts him on pace for a historic triple crown.
What sets Alvarez apart is his ability to combine elite bat speed with contact and discipline at the plate. His 19.6% whiff rate and 17.1% strikeout rate are both below average for a hitter of his caliber, making him a rare combination of power and patience. Only Miguel Cabrera has posted a triple crown since 2012, and each of the last four batters to achieve that feat also won MVP.
While Witt brings all-around value with his defensive prowess and speed, Alvarez dominates with pure offensive production. Witt leads the majors with 26 stolen bases and 16 Outs Above Average, while his .386 xwOBA ranks in the top 10 among hitters.
The MVP race is wide open as the 2026 season reaches its midpoint. Ben Rice, Nick Kurtz, and a healthy Mike Trout are also in the mix. Cam Schlittler and Kevin McGonigle could also make a case if their pitching remains elite. Yet, as of now, the battle remains between Witt and Alvarez.
The next chapter in the MVP saga will be written when the Royals and Astros meet again in mid-July.
