The New York Yankees are set to welcome back two key contributors as Gerrit Cole returns from injury and Jose Caballero rejoins the roster. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Pirates are promoting top prospect Esmerlyn Valdez, and the Cleveland Guardians continue their hot streak by sweeping the Detroit Tigers.
Gerrit Cole is scheduled to start for the Yankees against the Tampa Bay Rays as he makes his first appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2025. Cole’s final rehab outing was impressive, he pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run while striking out six batters. New York also activated infielder Jose Caballero after a brief stint on the injured list with a fractured finger. Caballero’s return gives the Yankees more flexibility at multiple positions. Outfield prospect Spencer Jones was optioned back to the minors to make room for Caballero, after hitting just .167 with 12 strikeouts in his 24 at-bats.
Pittsburgh is promoting 22-year-old outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez to take over for Billy Cook. Valdez is ranked as a top-10 prospect in the Pirates’ system and has hit 26 home runs across two minor league levels in 2025. At Triple-A, Valdez has hit 10 homers in 46 games while reducing his strikeout rate to 21.1%. He has experience playing first base and right field, giving manager Derek Shelton options as Ryan O’Hearn remains sidelined.
The Cleveland Guardians continued their dominance with a sweep of the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. Lefty Joey Cantillo delivered a strong start and Patrick Bailey hit his first home run with the team. The Guardians have now won six straight games and nine of their last 10, giving them a 3.5-game lead in the AL Central. The Tigers, meanwhile, have dropped six in a row and now sit at 20-31 on the season after falling to last place in the division.
With Cole back in the rotation and Valdez ready to make an impact, the next few games will be critical for both the Yankees and Pirates. The Guardians will look to extend their winning streak as they continue to build distance in the AL Central. Cleveland and Pittsburgh will be in action this weekend, while Cole’s return could give New York a much-needed lift in their push for playoff contention.
Mercer, ranked No. 7 in the 2028 class, will likely be a top-20 prospect in the 2027 cycle. The decision makes him the Bearcats’ highest recruit since at least 2007 and their first five-star recruit since Lance Stephenson in 2009.
