The Los Angeles Angels activated first baseman Trey Mancini and added rookie Denzer Guzman to the active roster ahead of their series opener against the Houston Astros. Mancini, who spent the 2024 season on the sidelines, signed a minor league contract with the Angels in the offseason. After spending time in Triple-A Salt Lake, he hit .273/.377/.464 with six home runs in 224 plate appearances. His 14.3% walk rate outpaces the average for the Pacific Coast League, while his 22% strikeout rate remains in line with league norms.
Guzman, 23, will make his major league debut at third base. The Angels acquired the rookie via trade from the Chicago Cubs in the offseason. His promotion comes as the team continues to manage a thin infield due to injuries.
The Angels also moved Moncada to the 60-day injured list, effectively removing the slugger from trade considerations at the deadline. Moncada has been sidelined since May 22 with right knee discomfort, a recurring issue since last summer. With a $4 million salary for the remainder of the season, Moncada’s absence increases the financial pressure on the team’s remaining roster.
Grissom and Frazier were placed on the injured list retroactive to June 5 and June 6 respectively. Grissom is dealing with a left oblique strain while Frazier has right elbow inflammation. Both players have struggled for consistency this season, with Grissom hitting .241/.308/.368 and Frazier batting .227/.290/.372 in 116 games.
Nolan Schanuel returned from the injured list over the weekend after missing time with left ankle inflammation. He played in two games but will sit out tonight’s contest due to lingering soreness. Schanuel said he does not expect to return to the IL.
The Angels now have a clearer picture of their depth heading into the second half of the season. With Mancini and Guzman in the lineup, the team hopes to stabilize the infield while managing the ongoing injury bug.
