The Los Angeles Angels are set to promote catcher Logan Porter to the major league roster, per Ari Alexander of 7News. Porter signed a minor league deal with the Angels five days ago after opting for free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment from the San Francisco Giants. The move comes as backup catcher Sebastian Rivero left last night’s game with what appears to be a hand injury.
Porter, 30, is entering his third major league organization after brief stints with the Kansas City Royals and Giants. In 47 total plate appearances across those teams, he hit .184/.326/.289. However, in parts of five Triple-A seasons, he has posted a more respectable .244/.359/.389 line. Porter has walked at a 14.4% rate in over 1200 Triple-A plate appearances, showing a keen eye at the plate.
Defensively, Porter offers the Angels a reliable backup to starting catcher Logan O’Hoppe. In the minors, he has caught 22% of runners attempting to steal. Baseball Prospectus has given him quality framing grades, though his blocking abilities are slightly below average.
The Angels have already used four catchers in 2026, and Porter will be the fifth. He joins O’Hoppe, Rivero, Travis d’Arnaud, and Omar Martinez on the catching depth chart. With Porter having full minor league options remaining, the Angels do not need to designate him for assignment if d’Arnaud or Rivero return to action.
To make room for Porter, the Angels will need to open both 26-man and 40-man roster spots. This could involve sending Rivero to the injured list or moving right-hander Jack Kochanowicz to the 60-day IL after he recently underwent Tommy John surgery.
Porter’s promotion marks a quick turnaround for the veteran backstop, who signed with the Angels just days after being cut by the Giants. His presence on the roster gives the Angels flexibility in the catching department and could ease the workload for O’Hoppe.
The Angels will look to continue their climb in the standings as they prepare for their next game against the Oakland A’s on Monday. Porter’s on-field debut is expected to come soon.
