The Houston Astros designated right-hander Ryan Weiss for assignment and selected the contract of infielder Raynel Delgado to fill the 26-man roster spot. Weiss, who made his major league debut in 2024, struggled out of the bullpen and was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land in early May. Delgado, 26, will make his MLB debut after being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays in a trade for cash considerations.
Weiss, 29, signed with the Astros in December on a one-year, $2.6 million guaranteed contract with a club option for 2027. He made nine appearances with Houston, posting an 0-3 record and a 7.62 ERA, with eight home runs and 20 walks in 11 innings. His 4.73 SIERA showed some underlying value, but his struggles with hard contact and home runs made it difficult to justify keeping him on the active roster. After being optioned to Sugar Land, Weiss posted an 8.41 ERA in five starts, leading the Astros to DFA him.
If Weiss clears waivers, the Astros will be free of the remaining $1.73 million on his contract. However, if he is claimed, Houston will be responsible for the rest of the guaranteed money. Weiss has prior experience being outrighted, but doing so again would mean forfeiting the remainder of his guaranteed pay if he rejects another outright assignment.
Delgado brings versatility to the Astros’ infield. The 26-year-old can play all four infield positions, including shortstop, and has stolen 22 bases in 26 attempts this season. He hit .250 with a 77 wRC+ in 253 plate appearances at Triple-A. Delgado was drafted by the Cleveland Guardians in 2018 and has since signed minor league contracts with the Milwaukee Brewers and Tampa Bay Rays before being acquired by Houston.
The move gives the Astros more flexibility with their infield depth while giving Delgado a chance to contribute in a big-league role. Weiss’s DFA also allows Houston to remain under the luxury tax threshold if he is claimed or outrighted.
