The Milwaukee Brewers have signed right-handed pitcher Lyon Richardson to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Nashville, per his transactions tracker at MLB.com. Richardson, who was recently outrighted by the Cincinnati Reds for the second time, now has a fresh opportunity to prove himself in the Brewers' system.
Richardson, 26, was selected in the second round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Reds. Originally developed as a starting pitcher, he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and missed the entire season. Despite the setback, the Reds protected him on the 40-man roster in November 2022 to avoid the Rule 5 draft.
Since then, Richardson has transitioned to a relief role but has struggled to find consistency at the major league level. Over 56 2/3 innings in the majors, he has posted a 6.67 ERA. His command has been an issue, with a 10.1% walk rate in Triple-A over 62 1/3 innings in 2025 and 2026. However, he has also shown upside with a 24.7% strikeout rate and a 49% ground ball rate.
The Reds used up Richardson’s three option years by shuttling him between the majors and minors from 2023 through 2025. They claimed him off waivers in May 2027 due to roster injuries but outrighted him again shortly after. Because this was his second outright, Richardson elected free agency and signed with Milwaukee.
For the Brewers, the move carries minimal risk. Richardson is on a minor league deal with no major league salary obligations, giving the team a chance to evaluate him without roster pressure. Richardson’s pitch mix includes a four-seamer and sinker averaging 96 miles per hour, along with a slider, curveball, and changeup. His former second-round pedigree and potential fit well with Milwaukee’s track record of developing pitchers.
Richardson will now try to earn a big league return with Nashville. If he makes it back to the majors, he could be controlled affordably for years, as he has less than a year of service time. But first, he must prove he can perform consistently at the Triple-A level.
The Brewers will monitor Richardson’s progress in the coming weeks as the 2027 season enters its final stretch.
