The Seattle Mariners made several roster moves ahead of their upcoming games. Infielder Patrick Wisdom was reinstated from the 10-day injured list while left-hander Robinson Ortiz was recalled from Triple-A. To make room for them, the team optioned right-hander Domingo González and infielder Leo Rivas. Additionally, the Mariners selected outfielder Brennen Davis to the 40-man roster and immediately optioned him to Triple-A.
Ortiz, 26, was acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers in a mid-December trade. He is set to make his major league debut as soon as he enters a game. Despite missing time due to injuries in the minors, Ortiz has shown promise. In 16 Triple-A innings this season, he has posted a 1.69 ERA and struck out 26.1% of batters faced. However, his walk rate has been a concern, as he has issued free passes at a 17.4% clip.
The Mariners appear to be reshuffling their bullpen for stability. They have been using a six-man rotation recently, which has limited their relief depth to just seven pitchers. González, who had four appearances in the past six days, has been heavily leaned on. With Ortiz now on the active roster, the team maintains seven relievers available even if González is unavailable for a day or two.
Ortiz has relied heavily on his fastball and slider this season, throwing them for 90% of his pitches. His four-seam fastball averages 94.4 mph and his slider sits at 83.9 mph. He has also used a cutter, though it has made up a smaller portion of his pitch mix.
Brennen Davis, the 2021 first-round pick, was added to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 Draft. The 22-year-old has yet to make his major league debut but has shown promise in the minors. His selection signals the Mariners’ intent to keep their top prospects secure.
With these moves, the Mariners are positioning themselves to handle a potential surge in pitching demands. Ortiz’s debut is expected soon and could provide a fresh left-handed option for the bullpen. Davis will head to Triple-A, where he can continue to develop. The Mariners will need to monitor their reliever usage carefully as the schedule continues. Their next game is set for Thursday night against the Oakland Athletics.
