The Miami Marlins have re-signed right-handed reliever Zach Pop on a minor league contract, according to the MLB.com transaction log. Pop will report to Triple-A Jacksonville and is expected to compete for a spot on the 2025 big league roster. The deal marks his return to the organization where he began his MLB career in 2021.
Pop signed a major league deal with the Phillies in the offseason and made seven appearances this season before suffering a right calf strain on April 13. He spent the rest of the year on the injured list. After recovering, Philadelphia did not re-add him to the active roster and instead designated him for assignment. Pop cleared waivers and elected free agency last week before reuniting with Miami.
The 29-year-old Pop made 74 2/3 innings of work with the Marlins across parts of two seasons, posting a 3.98 ERA. He was traded to the Blue Jays at the 2022 deadline and has since pitched for the Mariners and Mets, in addition to his brief stint in Philadelphia. Over his MLB career, Pop has a 4.83 ERA in 169 2/3 innings.
Pop’s pitch mix is anchored by a 96.2 mph sinker that generates a high rate of ground balls. However, he has struggled to miss bats consistently, resulting in a career 19.5% strikeout rate. His ability to induce contact and limit hard-hit balls will be key factors in his ability to contribute at the major league level.
For the Marlins, the move gives them an experienced right-handed arm with prior success at Triple-A and a chance to evaluate Pop in spring training. He will compete with younger relievers for a spot on the 2025 roster. The minor league deal carries no major financial obligation for Miami, allowing them to assess his value without risk.
Pop’s return to the Marlins adds depth to their system as they continue to rebuild their bullpen. His familiarity with the organization and history of success in Florida could give him an edge in the competition. The next step for Pop is to report to Jacksonville and begin preparations for the 2025 season.
