The Mets made several roster moves on Monday, reinstating left-hander A.J. Minter from the 60-day injured list and selecting Eric Wagaman to the active roster. Infielder Jared Young was also reinstated from the 10-day IL, while Tyrone Taylor was placed on the 10-day IL with a right hip flexor strain. Right-hander Jonathan Pintaro and outfielder Nick Morabito were optioned to make room for the returning players.
Minter, who signed a two-year, $22 million deal with the Mets ahead of the 2025 season, has struggled with injuries since joining the team. He made only 11 appearances last year before going on the IL with a lat strain that required season-ending surgery. In 2026, he began the season on the IL but was able to start a rehab assignment in April before being moved to the 60-day IL due to left hip discomfort.
Before his injury troubles, Minter was a dominant reliever for the Atlanta Braves from 2020 to 2024, posting a 2.85 ERA and striking out 30.1% of batters faced over 243 innings. Now healthy, he is expected to compete with Brooks Raley as the Mets’ primary lefty reliever. Raley has been the club’s go-to lefty this season, while Sean Manaea has worked mostly in bulk relief roles.
Wagaman, 28, was claimed off waivers by the Mets last month and is returning to the 40-man roster after a strong 13-game run with the Syracuse Mets. He hit an impressive .372/.462/.581 in 52 plate appearances, including a .424 batting average on balls in play. That performance came after being designated for assignment by the Marlins and traded to the Twins, who also cut him loose before the Mets grabbed him.
The Mets are struggling at 22-32 and 7.5 games out of a playoff spot. If they continue to fall short, they could enter the trade deadline as sellers. Minter and Raley are both impending free agents and potential trade candidates if the team decides to pivot.
With the outfield logjam, Wagaman could see time in the corner spots, especially with MJ Melendez hitting just .119/.288/.167 since May and Juan Soto, A.J. Ewing, and Carson Benge splitting playing time. The Mets will look to finalize their roster changes ahead of their next game.
