The Detroit Tigers claimed outfielder James Outman off waivers from the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, creating roster space by moving Javier Báez from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list. Outman, 29, joins a Tigers outfield that has been struggling with injuries, giving manager A.J. Hinch a defensive upgrade in center field after using Matt Vierling and Wenceel Pérez in the role for the past six weeks.
Outman brings above-average sprint speed and arm strength, but his bat has been a concern. Since the start of the 2024 season, Outman has struck out in 39.3% of his plate appearances, the worst rate among the 444 players with 300 or more plate appearances in that span. He’s hit just .144/.235/.284 in that time, with only 8.8% walk rate to offset his contact issues.
The Twins acquired Outman from the Los Angeles Dodgers at last year’s trade deadline in exchange for reliever Brock Stewart. Minnesota already had strong left-handed outfield options like Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner, and top prospects Walker Jenkins and Emmanuel Rodriguez. Outman was out of options in 2026, making the move puzzling at the time. This season, his 41.4% strikeout rate is the worst in baseball among players with at least 40 plate appearances.
Detroit’s outfield situation remains uncertain. Parker Meadows, who suffered a concussion and broken forearm in an April collision with Riley Greene, is expected to return this summer. Báez’s recovery from a sprained ankle has stalled, and reports suggest he’s being shut down due to ongoing discomfort. The Tigers have won seven of their last nine games, with returning starters Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize fueling the momentum.
The Tigers will need to make a roster move before Friday’s game to make room for Outman. While his defensive upside is valuable, his offensive struggles could limit his role to a pinch-runner or defensive replacement. Detroit will likely continue monitoring the trade market for outfield help as the July deadline approaches.

The Philadelphia Phillies have added outfielder Derek Hill in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, acquiring the 30-year-old in exchange for outfield prospect Dylan Campbell and infielder Jose Colmenares. The deal also includes $250K of international bonus pool space, which could help the Phillies in
