TITLE: Philadelphia Union Extend Homegrown Defender Nathan Harriel Through 2028–29
Philadelphia Union have locked in Nathan Harriel through the 2028–29 season with an option for 2029–30. The 24-year-old United States international signed the contract extension Wednesday, ensuring he remains a key figure in the Union's backline for years to come.
Harriel, who joined the Union's first team ahead of the 2021 season, has made 148 appearances across all competitions. In that span, he has recorded nine goals and five assists. His versatility and leadership have made him a dependable presence on the field and a growing voice in the locker room.
The defender has also represented the U.S. Men's National Team, earning three caps. He played a pivotal role for the U.S. at the 2024 Summer Olympics, adding to his growing international resume.
" Nate has established himself as an essential piece of our backline over the past five years," said Jon Scheer, Philadelphia's interim sporting director. "His versatility, competitiveness, and dedication have been vital to the team’s success, and his emergence as a leader both on and off the field has been significant. We look forward to his continued impact and the important role he will play in the years ahead."
The contract extension solidifies the Union's defensive core and signals their commitment to developing and retaining homegrown talent. Harriel's performance and consistency have made him a valuable asset, and the long-term deal reflects the club's confidence in his future.
The Union will look to Harriel to continue his strong play as they build for the 2025 season. Philadelphia returns to action next month with training camp set to begin in early January.
