The Portland Fire edged the Connecticut Sun 85-80 in a thrilling WNBA rematch at the Moda Center on Wednesday, May 27. Bridget Carleton led the way for Portland with 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting, while Hailey Van Lith answered with 19 points and six assists for the Sun. The Fire improved to 8-4 on the season, while Connecticut fell to 6-6.
The game was a rematch of the Sun’s narrow 83-82 loss to the Fire earlier this month. This time, Portland came out with more intensity, outscoring Connecticut 22-17 in the first quarter. The Fire’s high-octane offense, led by Carla Leite’s seven first-half assists, overwhelmed the Sun’s backcourt early.
Connecticut’s Aneesah Morrow was a force inside, finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds. She battled through double teams all night, keeping the Sun in the game. Despite her efforts, the Sun struggled to contain Carleton, who hit five three-pointers and connected on 66.7% of her shots.
The fourth quarter was a seesaw battle, with the Sun cutting a 10-point deficit to three with 3:12 remaining. Van Lith hit a crucial three to make it 79-76, but Portland’s defense held firm down the stretch. Leite added 15 points and seven assists for the Fire, who shot 44% from deep.
Portland’s home-court advantage was on full display in front of a sellout crowd. The Fire’s 26-18 rebounding edge and 21-14 assist margin helped them control the tempo. Connecticut shot just 39% from the field compared to 47% for the Fire.
With the win, the Fire remain in the playoff conversation, sitting just one game behind the New York Liberty in the Eastern Conference. The Sun now face a three-game road trip, starting with a matchup against the Chicago Sky on Saturday.
Next up for the Fire is a home game against the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday, while the Sun look to regroup in Chicago.
