The New York Knicks stunned the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 on Wednesday night to take a commanding 3-1 series lead in the NBA Finals, completing the largest comeback in Finals history with a 29-point rally. OG Anunoby sealed the win with a clutch tip-in on a missed Jalen Brunson three-pointer with just 1.2 seconds left on the clock.
Brunson led the Knicks with 36 points, while Anunoby added 33 points, including the game-winning basket. The Spurs had built a 29-point lead at one point, leading 81-52 early in the third quarter before the Knicks exploded for 58 points in the final 18 minutes.
San Antonio shot 11-for-16 from three in the first half but went cold after intermission, finishing 3-for-17 from beyond the arc in the second half. The Knicks capitalized on the offensive slump, outscoring the Spurs 58-30 in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Victor Wembanyama tallied 24 points and 13 rebounds for the Spurs, but struggled from the field, shooting 9-for-25. He also missed two free throws with 1:47 remaining when San Antonio led 104-103. Dylan Harper added 21 points, while De'Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell each scored 18.
"I don't know if there was a play bigger than any other play in the history of Knicks basketball," said Knicks coach Mike Brown. "I told OG as big, as strong, as athletic as he is, he's got to be a monster on the offensive glass tonight."
The Spurs had control for most of the night but were unable to maintain it as the Knicks made a furious push in the fourth quarter. "We got on our heels, we missed some shots," said Spurs coach Mitch Johnson. "It's disappointing, to say the least."
Wembanyama admitted the Spurs were outplayed in the second half. "I can't really explain it right now," he said. "We clearly weren't the most hungry in the second half."
Game 5 is set for Saturday night in San Antonio, with the Spurs favored by 5.5 points. The Knicks are now one win away from capturing their first NBA title since 1973.
