The Dallas Wings edged the Washington Mystics 87-83 in a high-scoring, back-and-forth showdown at College Park Center on Monday night. The game marked a pivotal early-season test for both teams, with Dallas improving to 2-2 and Washington dropping to 2-2 as well. The Mystics led for most of the fourth quarter but could not hold off the explosive shooting of rookie sensation Paige Bueckers, who led Dallas with 27 points and 3.5 three-pointers made.
Washington relied heavily on its star backcourt duo of Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen, who combined for 55 points. Citron dropped a career-high 30 points, shooting a blistering 10-of-14 from the floor in the Mystics' most recent win over Indiana. Iriafen added 25 points and nine rebounds, showcasing her mid-range mastery. However, Dallas’ perimeter attack, led by Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale, proved too much to contain in the final minutes.
The turning point came in the fourth quarter when Dallas’ guards began to hit their signature threes. Bueckers, who is shooting 54.5% from deep this season, knocked down two consecutive three-pointers to cut the Mystics' lead to two. Ogunbowale added a clutch jumper in transition, and with under two minutes to go, Dallas took a one-point lead. Washington’s late-game defense faltered, and the Wings' free throw shooting down the stretch helped them seal the win.
Dallas head coach Jose Fernandez made key adjustments in the second half, emphasizing ball movement and spacing. The Wings shot 42% from beyond the arc in the second half, compared to just 29% in the first. Azi Fudd, returning from injury, added 15 points and five assists off the bench, giving Dallas a much-needed spark.
Mystics center Shakira Austin dominated the boards with 12 rebounds, but Dallas held a 44-39 edge in points in the paint. Washington’s struggles on the glass and at the free throw line (7-of-16) were costly in the final minutes. Coach Natalie Achonwa will look to tighten up the defensive rotations and improve free throw shooting in the coming days.
Dallas remains in a tight race for the top of the Western Conference, while Washington must regroup quickly. The Mystics face the New York Liberty on Friday in a key Eastern Conference matchup. The Wings will host the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday in their next game.

The Toronto Blue Jays are counting on Max Scherzer and Shane Bieber to provide much-needed stability in their starting rotation as the season progresses. Scherzer, 41, is expected to return from the injured list in early to mid-June after a rehab assignment. Bieber, also on the IL, will begin a reha
