The San Antonio Spurs edged the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-115 in a grueling double-overtime battle in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals on Monday night. Victor Wembanyama led the Spurs with a historic performance, tallying 41 points and 24 rebounds. Dylan Harper added 24 points and a franchise playoff-record seven steals.
Wembanyama, the 19-year-old French sensation, became the youngest player in NBA playoff history to reach 40 points and 20 rebounds in a single game. His dominance on both ends of the floor gave the Spurs a crucial edge in the marathon contest. Harper, the rookie guard, also made history by becoming the first rookie since Magic Johnson to finish a playoff game with at least 20 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and five steals.
Alex Caruso paced the Thunder with 31 points, but his team struggled to contain the Spurs’ relentless energy. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was named MVP of the All-Star Game earlier in the season, shot just 7-of-24 from the field and finished with 24 points. It marked his worst first-half shooting performance in nearly three years.
"This was a war of wills," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "The levels of mental toughness exuded by both teams ... we needed every second from everybody that played."
The game saw multiple lead changes and a total of 63 combined points scored in the two overtime periods. Wembanyama remained a force in the extra time, scoring 12 of his final 14 points in the final 10 minutes. The Spurs shot 51% from the field in the second half and overtime, compared to the Thunder’s 43%.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged the need for improvement. "We have to get better from this game," he said.
The Spurs now hold a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference Finals. Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday night at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton defeated Springfield, 2-1, on Tuesday night at the MassMutual Center, using clutch goals from Rutger McGroarty and Bill Zonnon and 27 saves from Sergei Murashov to take a two-games-to-one lead in the best-of-five Atlantic Division finals.
