Detroit Pistons forward Jalen Duren is expected to sign a deal below 25% of the salary cap in restricted free agency after a strong regular season but underwhelming playoff performance. The 22-year-old, who declined a contract extension last year and earned All-NBA honors, is projected to land a deal averaging around $40 million per season rather than the full Rose Rule max of $49 million. This would place his total deal for five years near $200 million.
Duren’s regular season production was impressive. He averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game across 70 contests while posting a PER of 25.8. However, his playoff numbers dropped significantly. In 14 games, he averaged just 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists with a PER of 14.3. This stark contrast has led to lower expectations for his next contract.
An East executive told ESPN: "If he wants to get a max, they'll tell him to go get one. But he's Cade's guy, so they'll have to play it the right way." This suggests the Pistons are likely to match any offer Duren receives rather than let him test the market for a full max deal.
Duren is entering his age-22 season and still has room to grow, especially in high-stakes playoff situations. His development over the next year could significantly impact his market value and the Pistons' decision-making in free agency.
Among the 2023 NBA Draft class, Duren is one of the few to earn All-NBA honors, but he is not the only one with max deal potential. Paolo Banchero never made an All-NBA team, Chet Holmgren never had the 30% provision in his contract, and Jalen Williams made All-NBA in 2025 but missed the Rose Rule deadline.
The Pistons have until July 6 to match any offer Duren receives. His next contract will shape not only his future but also the team’s long-term direction as they build around Cade Cunningham.
