Kenny Atkinson is standing firm in the face of mounting questions about his future with the Cleveland Cavaliers. With three years remaining on his contract, the head coach insists he has full confidence in himself and the team as the franchise weighs its next move following a disappointing Eastern Conference Finals performance against the New York Knicks.
Atkinson led the Cavaliers to decisive Game 7 wins in the first two playoff rounds before falling short in a six-game series against New York. Despite leading by 22 points in Game 1, Cleveland failed to recover after the Knicks erased the deficit and controlled the remainder of the series. The Cavaliers never scored more than 106 points in the final three games of the series.
"Listen, I have confidence, confidence in myself first of all, confidence in the group," Atkinson said Monday when asked about his job security.
Atkinson defended his in-game decisions, including not calling timeouts to stop New York's momentum after Game 1 and his belief that Cleveland had "analytically" won two of the first three games of the series. The team's struggles to close out the Knicks have fueled speculation about potential changes to the coaching staff, even as owner Dan Gilbert has not publicly indicated any intention to replace him.
The hiring of Atkinson in 2024 was not without controversy. While some executives in the front office preferred James Borrego for the job, Gilbert chose to bring in Atkinson to replace J.B. Bickerstaff. Early struggles in the regular season led to internal scrutiny of Atkinson’s performance, though he retained the backing of star guard Donovan Mitchell and played a key role in integrating James Harden into the offense.
The NBA has seen a trend of coaching changes even after strong playoff runs. The Knicks, for example, fired Tom Thibodeau after reaching the Conference Finals last season, and their decision appears vindicated as they advanced to the Finals this year. That context has only heightened speculation about Cleveland’s next steps.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst hinted at potential coaching changes in a recent podcast, though he did not name names or provide specifics.
With no immediate decision date in sight, the Cavaliers will enter the summer with questions surrounding their coaching future. Atkinson’s confidence may not be enough to silence them.

The Vegas Golden Knights have shattered the NHL’s unwritten rules this season, proving that winning a Stanley Cup can take precedence over tradition, optics, and risk management. By making bold coaching changes, embracing a physical identity, and acquiring players like Mitch Marner and Carter Hart,
