LeBron James has declared himself the greatest basketball player of all time, stating in a recent interview with Time that if an NBA general manager had to choose the No. 1 overall pick between him and other all-time legends like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, he would come out on top.
The four-time NBA champion and all-time leading scorer in league history made his case with confidence, acknowledging that all of the greats believe themselves to be the best but insisting his own legacy stands above the rest. "I'm not taking nobody over me," James said. "There's no question."
He continued by noting that Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Shaquille O'Neal, Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would all say the same about themselves. But James then flipped the script. "If there's a general manager and he's eyeballing all of us on a baseline, with the No. 1 pick, it's gonna be hard not to take me, champ."
James also touched on the topic of influence, recognizing that fans who grew up during Jordan’s era often favor the Chicago Bulls legend. But he stressed that his own journey and impact set him apart. "My journey is my journey," he said. "I do what I do. I know what I've brought to the table."
At 39 years old, James is in the final stages of his 22nd NBA season. He has already secured four MVP awards, 22 All-Star selections and four NBA championships. If he stays healthy and plays next season, he will break Wilt Chamberlain’s record for most minutes played in a career.
James will become an unrestricted free agent this summer and has said his decision to return for a 24th season will depend on his passion for preparation. "When I'm not in love with getting to the arenas on game days five hours before to start my preparation," he said, "then I know I'll be done."
His comments come at a time when his legacy is being redefined by his continued dominance on the court. He is currently averaging 25.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game this season, proving he can still carry a contender.
With the Cleveland Cavaliers in the thick of an Eastern Conference playoff race, James remains a central figure in the league’s narrative. His next decision will shape not only his own legacy but also the future of the team and the broader NBA landscape.
