Jahmal Mosley has made it clear: he wants to elevate Zion Williamson’s game by opening up the floor and letting the superstar thrive as a playmaker. During his introductory press conference as the new head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, Mosley emphasized his belief that Williamson has only begun to scratch the surface of his potential. He plans to utilize Zion’s basketball IQ and versatility by playing him in different positions and giving him more space to attack.
Mosley brings a wealth of experience from his three seasons with the Orlando Magic, where he coached a young core that included Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. Both players saw significant growth under his guidance, with Banchero averaging 19.0 points and 8.1 rebounds in 2023-24 while Wagner chipped in 17.8 points and 6.2 assists per game. That background in developing playmakers gives Mosley a clear blueprint for how to maximize Williamson’s impact.
Williamson himself had a standout 2023-24 season, averaging 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and shooting a career-high 60.0% from the field in 62 games. His health was a key factor, and Mosley is eager to build on that foundation. "I think just opening the floor up a lot more for him to attack the basket, giving space, being able to live at the free throw line consistently," Mosley said. "Some of the things he's done here have been obviously spectacular -- and so just making sure that we continue that along with us being healthy."
Mosley’s approach aligns with the Pelicans' broader strategy to surround Williamson with shooters and ball-movers. The team’s roster includes potential trade targets and free-agent additions who can stretch the floor and create driving lanes. With Williamson’s elite athleticism and Mosley’s offensive acumen, the Pelicans are building a system that could make him one of the most dangerous players in the league.
"He's an excellent basketball player with a high IQ for playmaking, for making guys around him better, knowing when to make plays and the right passes to make," Mosley said. "I really do believe that."
The Pelicans open training camp on September 28 in New Orleans. Mosley’s first full season at the helm will be a test of his philosophy and the team’s commitment to evolving around one of the NBA’s most unique talents. If everything clicks, the Pelicans could be a major contender in the Western Conference.
