The NBA playoffs are underway, and with them comes a new media landscape that is testing the patience of fans and analysts alike. For the first time, Amazon and NBC are sharing national TV broadcast duties, and early reactions from viewers and insiders suggest the shift is both a disruption and an opportunity. Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama’s emergence as a potential ratings magnet could help the league navigate the growing challenges of fragmented game access and declining local TV viewership.
Andrew Marchand of the Athletic recently joined the Dunc’d On podcast to break down the state of NBA media coverage. He noted that Amazon’s NBA coverage has been “technically strong but lacking in personality,” with its production values clearly above average but its commentary teams still finding their footing. NBC, on the other hand, has leaned heavily on veteran play-by-play man Mike Breen and analysts like Vince Carter and Lisa Salters, maintaining a familiar feel for longtime viewers. Marchand said, “NBC is playing it safe. Amazon is trying to be different. Neither has fully won over the audience yet.”
The playoff coverage also marks the first season of Inside the NBA on ESPN after leaving TNT. The show has seen some line changes, with Ernie Johnson out and Kevin Harlan and Rachel Nichols in. Ratings have remained steady, but the show has not yet seen a significant boost in viewership. As of April, Inside the NBA averaged 1.7 million viewers per episode, down slightly from its TNT days.
The NBA’s business model is also under scrutiny. With games spread across Prime Video, Peacock, and local cable providers, fans are increasingly confused about where to watch. The league is in the middle of a new media rights cycle, with a projected $24 billion in new TV and streaming deals on the horizon. That could lead to even more fragmentation. Blackouts are also becoming a bigger issue, especially in markets where local teams have not secured strong streaming deals.
Player availability has also been a concern this season. The NBA reported a 12% increase in games missed due to injury or rest compared to 2022-23. That has led to a 7% drop in regular-season viewership, according to Nielsen. Marchand said, “We’re seeing more games without the stars, and that affects the audience.”
Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs’ 19-year-old rookie, has been a bright spot. He averaged 21.4 points and 10.6 rebounds in April, and his performance has drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant and Kawhi Leonard. If Wembanyama can carry the Spurs deep into the playoffs, the league could see a ratings resurgence. His presence alone has driven a 34% increase in Spurs game views on streaming platforms.
As the playoffs progress, the NBA will be watching closely. The league’s next media rights decision is expected in the fall, and the results of this season’s coverage could shape that outcome. For now, fans are left navigating a confusing media landscape, hoping for clarity and consistency. The Spurs will host the Grizzlies in Game 3 of the first round on Thursday.
