Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic is on track to be in full shape for training camp next season after undergoing a minimally invasive lumbar microdiscectomy procedure. The Thunder confirmed the surgery and said the young guard will be ready in time for the start of the 2025 season.
Topic has faced a difficult road since entering the NBA. He missed his entire rookie season in 2024 due to a torn ACL suffered before the draft. This summer, he was diagnosed with early-stage testicular cancer, which further limited his availability during the 2024-25 season. Now, after undergoing back surgery, Topic is dealing with yet another hurdle in his professional journey.
Despite minimal NBA experience, Topic showed promise in the G League this season. In 13 games, the 6-foot-6 point guard averaged 18.4 points, 7.8 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game while playing 28 minutes per contest. His performance in the G League highlighted his playmaking ability and scoring touch, both of which will be important as he looks to carve out a role with the Thunder.
The Thunder selected Topic with the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. At just 20 years old, he has already overcome multiple major health challenges. His ability to stay on the floor and perform at a high level in the G League suggests he could be a valuable contributor in the future.
With Topic set to return in time for training camp, the Thunder will have a clearer picture of his readiness for the season. His development could play a role in Oklahoma City’s plans to build around young talent and a growing core.
The next step for Topic is full recovery and participation in team workouts. The Thunder will monitor his progress closely as they prepare for the 2025 campaign.
