The San Antonio Spurs are optimistic that De'Aaron Fox will return for Game 2 of their playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder after missing Game 1 with a right ankle sprain, sources told Marc J. Spears of Andscape.
Fox’s availability was a major storyline in Game 1, which the Spurs won in double overtime. He had been a key piece of San Antonio’s success in the playoffs, averaging 18.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game across 33.3 minutes of action in 11 playoff games this season.
In Fox’s absence, 19-year-old guard Dylan Harper made his first career playoff start and delivered a standout performance. Harper scored 24 points and recorded seven steals, showing the kind of defensive intensity and scoring punch that helped San Antonio secure the win.
Fox’s return could significantly impact the Spurs’ offensive flow and ball distribution. His ability to control the pace and create for teammates has been vital in the playoffs. With Fox sidelined in Game 1, the Spurs relied more on ball movement and a strong team defense to counter the Thunder’s high-octane attack.
The Spurs’ bench also played a key role in Game 1, with players like Keldon Johnson and Victor Wembanyama contributing in crucial moments. Wembanyama, who has been a defensive force in the series, recorded eight blocks and 12 rebounds in Game 1.
The Thunder, who trail the series 1-0, will look to adjust their defensive strategy to counter Fox if he returns. Oklahoma City’s young core, led by Brandon Miller and Chet Holmgren, will need to respond with more consistency after a tough Game 1 performance.
Fox’s ankle injury was not considered serious, and the Spurs’ medical staff has been optimistic about his recovery timeline. He did not practice ahead of Game 2 but is expected to undergo further evaluation on Thursday.
The series is set to continue Thursday night at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City. The Spurs will look to take a commanding 2-0 lead into the next game, while the Thunder will aim to regroup and adjust to Fox’s potential return.
