San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama took a rare break from the NBA Finals bubble on his off day before Game 3, visiting Gramercy Park in Manhattan to sketch a statue. The 22-year-old center, accompanied by his sister Eve, focused on the bronze figure of 19th-century actor Edwin Booth. The session was part of his ongoing mental recovery strategy after a pivotal turnover in Game 2.
Wembanyama is known for using creative outlets like drawing, pottery, and painting as part of his preparation. These activities help him refocus and maintain mental clarity during high-pressure playoff runs. He often draws medieval knights and uses the practice to sharpen his spatial awareness, a skill he directly links to his on-court performance.
"Really tried to relax. The Playoffs, it's like a whirlwind. It's hard to put your head out of the water," Wembanyama said after the Spurs' Game 3 victory. "Sometimes, I don't even got to watch the game back right away. I need some time off, let my brain cool down, recover. Recover as much for the body as for the mind."
The Spurs currently trail the Knicks 2-1 in the series. Wembanyama's Game 3 performance was a critical bounce-back, as he recorded 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 blocks. His ability to adjust after mistakes has been a key factor in the Spurs' playoff run this season.
Wembanyama has averaged 21.2 points and 10.1 rebounds per game in the postseason. His free-throw percentage has also improved from 58.3% during the regular season to 71.4% in the playoffs. These numbers highlight his growth and adaptability under pressure.
The center has been open about his belief in working on weaknesses, not just strengths. "As a kid, whether you're 10, 13, 16 years old, you're working for the future," he said. "I would say, long story short, play on your weaknesses, not only your strengths."
Wembanyama's diverse approach to training includes physical recovery methods like cold tubs and compression boots. However, he emphasizes the importance of mental recovery, which he considers equally vital for peak performance.
The Spurs now return to the court for Game 4 of the NBA Finals. Tipoff is scheduled for Thursday night in San Antonio. The team will look to even the series and bring home the Larry O'Brien Trophy.
