The Dallas Mavericks have made it clear to interested teams that Kyrie Irving is not for sale, sources told Marc Stein of The Stein Line. However, the Mavs remain open to trading Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Daniel Gafford as they continue to evaluate their roster ahead of the trade deadline.
Despite receiving trade inquiries for Irving this offseason, the Mavs are holding firm on the 10-time All-Star guard. General Manager Nico Harrison has emphasized that Irving is a key part of the Mavs' future, especially with the arrival of rookie sensation Cooper Flagg. Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, is expected to make an immediate impact and could help solidify Dallas’ backcourt depth alongside Luka Dončić.
The Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves have both been linked to Irving in trade rumors. Both teams are looking to upgrade their point guard play and could see value in a potential blockbuster deal. However, with Irving off the market, those discussions are likely to shift toward other Mavs assets.
Sources indicate that the Mavs are actively shopping Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and Daniel Gafford. Thompson, 34, is under contract for the 2024-25 season with a $25.4 million salary. Washington, 25, is in the final year of his deal with a $16.5 million player option for next season. Gafford, 24, is owed $11.3 million this season and is under contract through 2025-26.
Thompson has averaged 12.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game this season. Washington is averaging 12.1 points and 5.3 rebounds, while Gafford is contributing 6.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. The Mavs are seeking deals that would help them acquire additional assets or cap flexibility.
The team has also stated it is open to trading the No. 9 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. That pick could attract interest from teams looking to add future value in a draft class that is expected to be deep with talent.
With the trade deadline approaching on February 6, the Mavs are expected to remain active in the market. The Pistons and Timberwolves could be among the most serious suitors for any of Dallas’ available players.
