LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was expected to be a Day Two pick heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. Instead, the former Tigers signal-caller fell all the way to the seventh round, where the Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the 235th overall pick.
Nussmeier’s 2024 season was a breakout year. He threw for 4,403 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 64 percent of his passes. His production dropped in 2025, however, as he completed 67 percent of his passes for 1,927 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. That season coincided with a program-wide collapse at LSU, which led to the firing of head coach Brian Kelly.
Sources with multiple NFL teams told MajorLeagues.us that medical concerns were the primary reason for Nussmeier’s dramatic slide. Teams reportedly flagged his injury history and health profile as red flags, limiting his draft stock despite his Senior Bowl performance and strong interviews.
Nussmeier joins a quarterback room in Kansas City that is stacked with proven talent. Patrick Mahomes is locked in as the starter and future Hall of Famer. Justin Fields is the team’s backup, and Chris Oladokun is also on the roster. This gives Nussmeier little to no path to the starting job in 2026 or 2027.

Still, Nussmeier has a chance to learn from one of the best in the business. Andy Reid, a future Hall of Fame head coach, has a long history of developing quarterbacks and could give Nussmeier the tools to grow into a starter eventually. But for now, he must prove himself in the preseason and through limited opportunities.

Nussmeier’s college production, including a 6.7 yards per attempt average in 2024, suggests he has the arm strength and accuracy to play in the NFL. His 2025 season, however, was a step back, with just 3.2 yards per attempt. That inconsistency likely hurt his stock further.
With Mahomes under contract through 2029 and Fields set as the backup, Nussmeier must seize every chance to impress. If he performs well in training camp and the preseason, he could earn a roster spot and position himself for a trade or opportunity elsewhere. For now, his focus is on survival in a deep quarterback room.
