The Detroit Lions sparked debate by selecting Blake Miller with the 17th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Clemson offensive tackle was projected as a late first-round talent but fell short of expectations for some analysts. With three veteran tackles already on the roster, the decision raised questions about whether the Lions overreached for a player ranked No. 53 overall by some draft analysts.
Miller started 53 games at Clemson and was a reliable blocker with a well-rounded game. However, he was not viewed as elite among top tackle prospects like Spencer Fano, Francis Mauigoa, and Kadyn Proctor. According to one NFL team source, Miller was a reach at 17. Another national scout said, “I’m not the highest on him, but in this draft I would say no.” A director of player personnel added, “At 17, yes. But he can be a starting offensive tackle, and in this draft, it wasn’t a major reach, but still a reach to me.”
The Lions are betting on Miller to fill a starting role at right tackle. With Penei Sewell moving to the left side, Miller will take over a familiar position and benefit from a strong supporting cast. Tight ends Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright offer protection, while quarterback Jared Goff and running back Jahmyr Gibbs provide a high-volume offense that can mask occasional mistakes.

Miller also joins one of the best offensive line coaches in the NFL, Hank Fraley, who has a track record of developing young linemen. The Lions have a proven system and a winning culture, which could accelerate his development. If Miller adapts quickly, he could become a long-term solution on the right side for years to come.

The team’s move to replace veteran Taylor Decker with a rookie signals a shift in priorities. Detroit now has four starting tackles under 26 years old, a bold but potentially rewarding strategy. The Lions open the 2026 regular season on September 5 against the Arizona Cardinals. Miller’s early performance will be key to evaluating whether the 17th pick was a wise investment or a misstep.

The Vegas Golden Knights have shattered the NHL’s unwritten rules this season, proving that winning a Stanley Cup can take precedence over tradition, optics, and risk management. By making bold coaching changes, embracing a physical identity, and acquiring players like Mitch Marner and Carter Hart,
