Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. fell short of his projected top-10 status in the 2026 NFL Draft, landing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at No. 15 overall. Despite leading the Hurricanes to a National Championship and earning widespread praise from analysts, Bain’s draft stock dipped due to differing evaluations across NFL teams. The Bucs, however, see a promising future for the edge rusher under head coach Todd Bowles.
Bain entered the draft season as one of the most hyped prospects in college football. He ranked 10th in the Senior Bowl’s rankings and held a top-15 overall grade from Pro Football Focus. His season stats included 11 sacks, 16 tackles for loss, and a 28% pressure rate, numbers that typically warrant a top-10 pick. Yet, multiple teams passed on him in the first half of the draft.
Sources from several NFL teams cited a combination of positional need and alternate evaluations. Some teams viewed Bain as a tackle/end hybrid rather than a pure edge rusher, while others simply had different priorities in the top 14. One team’s scout noted: “We had him lower than the media consensus and needed a different position at the top.” This divergence in evaluation caused Bain’s slide.

The Buccaneers, however, see opportunity in the drop. Bowles, known for his creative defensive schemes, has a history of maximizing versatile edge defenders. With interior disruptors like Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey already on the roster, Bain can focus on the outside and utilize Bowles’ unique blitz packages. The Bucs also feature proven rushers like Yaya Diaby and Al-Quadin Muhammad, giving Bain a strong supporting cast.
Bain’s landing spot could also help him avoid the spotlight that often distracts top picks. The Bucs’ defensive line coach, Todd Wash, has a track record of developing young edge players, including Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul. With a strong mentorship system and a proven system, Bain has a clear path to success.

The Buccaneers’ decision to select Bain at 15th overall reflects a calculated risk that could pay off quickly. With a 2026 season opener scheduled for September 8, the pressure is on for Bain to make an immediate impact in Tampa Bay’s defense.
