The Colorado Avalanche were down 5-3 in Game 3 of their Western Conference Final matchup against the Vegas Golden Knights before the Knights added a late empty-net goal to seal a 6-3 victory. The loss drops Colorado to the brink of elimination after a 0-2 series start. Despite a strong first period in which the Avs led 3-0, the second period once again proved fatal as Vegas scored five unanswered goals.
Gabriel Landeskog led the Avalanche with a goal and one assist. Jack Drury had a goal and two assists, while Sam Malinski added two assists. For Vegas, Jack Eichel recorded two assists, and Mitch Marner had two points as well. The Golden Knights are now one win away from a sweep and a trip to the Stanley Cup Final.
Colorado’s first period was electric. The Avs outshot the Knights 12-2 and built a 3-0 lead. But as has been the case in this series, the second period turned things around for Vegas. They outscored Colorado 5-0 in the frame and controlled the pace of play.
The Avalanche had 18 giveaways in Game 3, with nearly half of those occurring in the second period. A prime example came at 4:12 of the middle frame when Drury won a defensive zone face-off to Malinski, but Malinski immediately gave the puck to Mitch Marner, leading to the Knights’ second goal. That sequence exemplifies Colorado’s struggles with possession and transition.
Vegas has dominated the series in face-off wins, and Eichel has been a key driver of that success. The Knights have outscored the Avs 5-0 in the second period across the three games. Colorado must find a way to even the face-off battle, and getting Landeskog or Brock Nelson against Eichel in the circle could be a game-changer.

The Avalanche have shown they can build early leads, as they did in Game 3. But they must avoid the second-period collapse that has plagued them in this series. If they can control puck possession, limit giveaways, and win more face-offs, they still have a chance.
Game 4 is set for Tuesday in Las Vegas. The Avs must avoid a sweep and keep the series alive. But with the Golden Knights needing just one win to reach the Stanley Cup Final, the pressure is squarely on Colorado.

The Vegas Golden Knights have shattered the NHL’s unwritten rules this season, proving that winning a Stanley Cup can take precedence over tradition, optics, and risk management. By making bold coaching changes, embracing a physical identity, and acquiring players like Mitch Marner and Carter Hart,
