The Vegas Golden Knights edged the Carolina Hurricanes 5-4 in double overtime of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday, capturing their first-ever Final win in overtime and taking a 2-1 series lead. Shea Theodore scored the game-winner at 5:23 of the second overtime while Mitch Marner set a Stanley Cup Final record with four points in a single period.
Mitch Marner was the story of the first 35 minutes, scoring the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Final history in just 6:10. His three goals and an assist gave him a record-setting four points in a period, surpassing the previous mark set by Maurice Richard in 1956. Marner also broke Frank Mahovlich’s franchise record for playoff points in a first season with a team, racking up 28 through the first three games.
The Hurricanes responded with a historic third-period rally. Jordan Staal scored the final goal of a 39-second, three-goal flurry to tie the game at 4-4. That sequence marked the fastest three goals in Stanley Cup Final history, besting the previous record of 56 seconds set by the 1954 Canadiens. Staal’s goal also made him the second 37-year-old in NHL history to start a Final with a three-game goal streak.
Carolina became the second team in Stanley Cup Final history to erase a four-goal deficit. The last team to do so was the 1972 New York Rangers, who trailed 5-1 before tying the game in a 6-5 loss to the Bruins. Jordan Martinook and Andrei Svechnikov were instrumental in the Hurricanes’ comeback, combining for three of their four goals in the third period.

Theodore’s double-overtime goal capped off a night of history. The defenseman now has two career playoff overtime goals, the only active blueliner to achieve the feat. He also became the seventh defenseman in NHL history to score multiple overtime goals in a single postseason.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 in the series, while the Hurricanes remain in control of their own destiny with two games remaining at T-Mobile Arena. The NHL also celebrated National Cancer Survivor Month during the game, honoring four survivors and raising over $9.1 million for Hockey Fights Cancer in the 2025-26 season.
Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final is set for Monday night in Las Vegas, with the Hurricanes aiming to tie the series and the Golden Knights seeking to take a commanding 3-1 lead.

The New York Yankees officially selected Ali Sánchez’s contract on Monday, marking a potential shift in their catching rotation.
