The Ottawa Charge defeated the Toronto Sceptres 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, with Gwyneth Philips making a franchise-record 42 saves in a shutout performance. The win moves Ottawa into the fourth and final playoff spot in the PWHL, as Brianne Jenner’s 10th goal of the season and Sarah Wozniewicz’s empty-net tally were enough to seal the victory at a sold-out Coca-Cola Coliseum.
Philips, who surpassed Boston’s Aerin Frankel for the most saves in a PWHL shutout, was unshakable in net for the Charge. Her 42 stops came against a Toronto team that outshot Ottawa by 24 shots in the game. The Sceptres’ Raygan Kirk, meanwhile, turned aside 16 of 17 shots in a valiant but ultimately futile effort.
Ottawa’s lone goal of the first two periods came from Jenner, who broke a 0-0 deadlock at 11:20 of the third. The captain’s goal, assisted by Rebecca Leslie, marked her first in eight games and ended a four-game pointless streak. Wozniewicz added insurance with an empty-net goal late in the third, giving the rookie forward six goals on the season and 11 points.
“This is a big win for us,” said Philips after the game. “I’m just excited to be back in the playoff spot. We’ve got some good energy in the locker room so I’m looking forward to the next three games.”
Jenner echoed the sentiment, saying the team is focused on the bigger picture. “I certainly think that when I’m playing my best hockey, I do need to be contributing offensively,” she said. “But the thing that’s motivating us right now is chasing that playoff spot. Gwyneth was huge for us today, but up and down our lineup, we had players coming up in key moments.”

Toronto head coach Troy Ryan was encouraged by the team’s effort but frustrated by the result. “I liked a lot of what went on today,” he said. “It was great to get the amount of shots we had. I would like to get a little bit of better quality for some of those shots, but I thought we were playing the right way.”
The win gives Ottawa 36 points (7-7-1-12), moving them ahead of the Sceptres (34 points, 9-1-5-11). Both teams will face the New York Sirens in their next games, with Toronto traveling to New York on Wednesday and Ottawa hosting the Sirens on Saturday.
The Charge are now 5-2-1-2 in games where they score two or fewer goals, a sign of their deep, balanced team effort. Ottawa’s next test will be a home game against a New York team still in the playoff hunt, as all five non-playoff teams remain in contention with two weeks left in the season.
