The Toronto Marlies pushed the North Division finals to a decisive Game 5 with a 5-2 win over the Cleveland Monsters at Coca-Cola Coliseum on Friday night. Ryan Tverberg led the charge with a two-goal, one-assist performance, while Artur Akhtyamov made 36 saves to keep Toronto in the Eastern Conference Finals hunt.
Tverberg’s first goal came late in the first period, giving the Marlies an early lead. He added another in the second to increase the margin to three. The Marlies’ balanced attack saw Alex Nylander, Henry Thrun, and Jacob Quillan all find the back of the net. Logan Shaw added two assists, giving him four points in the last two games.
Akhtyamov was sharp in net, turning aside 36 of 38 shots faced. He had a shutout bid going into the final three minutes before Cleveland’s Jack Williams, playing in his first career playoff game, scored his first career playoff goal. Williams also added an assist to give the Monsters some late life.
Despite the rally, the Marlies’ depth on the blue line and timely scoring proved too much for Cleveland’s Zach Sawchenko, who made 21 saves in a losing effort. Sawchenko entered the game with a 1.50 GAA but struggled against a relentless Toronto attack.

With the win, Toronto evens the best-of-seven series at 2-2. The decisive Game 5 will be played Sunday afternoon at Rocket Arena in Cleveland at 3:00 ET. The winner will advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Marlies have now won three of the last four games in the series after dropping Game 3 in convincing fashion. Cleveland’s 4-0 Game 3 victory had given them a commanding two-game lead, but Toronto’s resilience has kept the series alive.

The series now heads back to Cleveland, where the Monsters will look to end it at home. The Marlies, meanwhile, will rely on Tverberg and Akhtyamov to continue their strong play. Toronto’s penalty kill, which has held firm all series, will also be under the microscope in a high-stakes Game 5.
Game 5 is set for Sunday, May 24, at Rocket Arena. The winner will face the winner of the Carolina Hurricanes’ series in the Eastern Conference Finals.
