The Minnesota Wild defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 in Game 3 of their first-round Stanley Cup Playoff series on Saturday night, evening the best-of-seven matchup at two games apiece. Minnesota scored three unanswered goals in the first period and limited the Avs to just one power-play goal on three chances to secure the win.
The Wild came out aggressive and controlled the pace of the game early. They built a 3-0 lead within the first 14 minutes, forcing Colorado head coach Jared Bednar to pull starting goaltender Scott Wedgewood. Wedgewood, who allowed three goals on 12 shots, had been a key factor in Colorado's early success in this series. In Game 1, he posted a .833 save percentage with 30 stops, but he struggled again in Game 3.
Minnesota’s defensive play was a major factor in the win. The Wild blocked 15 shots in Game 3 and limited Colorado to just one power-play goal. The Avalanche had three man-advantage opportunities but only converted once. Meanwhile, Minnesota capitalized on two of their three power plays, showing improved discipline and execution.
Mackenzie Blackwood replaced Wedgewood in net for the Avalanche and finished the game with 20 saves on 23 shots. Bednar cited the need for a spark when making the change. “From what I’ve seen out of Blackwood here recently, a rested guy and a guy that we trust, I felt like it was a good opportunity for us to get him in and see if it sparked our group and if he could maybe close our door the rest of the way,” Bednar said.
Jesper Wallstedt will start in net for Minnesota in Game 4, looking to build on the momentum from Saturday’s win. The Wild have now started Wallstedt twice in the series and will need him to continue limiting Colorado’s scoring chances.

Colorado will need to find more offensive production and create more traffic in front of Wallstedt if they hope to regain control of the series. The Avalanche outshot Minnesota in the second and third periods but came up empty in those frames. They must find a way to break through the Wild’s defense and generate more high-danger chances.
Game 4 is set for Monday, May 11, at 8 p.m. ET in Saint Paul. The series will shift back to Denver for Game 5 if needed.
