Aleksander Barkov made his return to competitive hockey with an assist for Team Finland in a 3-1 win over Germany at the 2026 IIHF World Championship. The Florida Panthers captain played 18:01, notching three shots on goal and winning eight of 11 face-offs in his first game since Game 6 of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final. His return comes after missing the entire 2025 NHL season due to a serious knee injury.
Barkov assisted on a power-play goal by Panthers teammate Anton Lundell just eight minutes into the first period. The performance drew praise from Lundell, who said, “I think he looked great. He was strong, he was fast, he’s the ‘Barky’ I’ve seen in the past. He’s always able to amaze us, and we’re all happy to see him back in action again.”
Barkov sustained the injury during training camp in September and required ACL and MCL surgery, a recovery timeline of seven to nine months. He began skating in January but was unable to return for the Panthers, who finished 40-38-4 and missed the playoffs. His absence also meant missing the 2026 Winter Olympics after being named to the preliminary roster in June.
This marks the first time Barkov has represented Finland at the World Championship since 2016, when he recorded nine points in nine games to help Finland win silver. He was selected to the team last June and is expected to be a key contributor in the tournament.
Barkov’s last competitive game came on June 17, 2025, in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final, where the Panthers defeated the Oilers 5-2. That season, he led the NHL in face-offs taken (446) and was second in face-off percentage (58.3). He also tallied 22 points in 23 playoff games and was awarded the Selke Trophy for the third time after a season that saw him lead the Panthers in face-offs and rank second in team scoring with 71 points.
With Finland set to face a new opponent in their next game, Barkov’s return to international competition could signal a strong team performance. His presence on the ice is expected to elevate Finland’s chances as they continue their campaign in the 2026 IIHF World Championship.
