Auston Matthews has reaffirmed his commitment to the Toronto Maple Leafs, delivering a major confidence boost to the organization during a Zoom meeting with general manager John Chayka and president Mats Sundin. While no formal contract extension was announced, the two-time Art Ross Trophy winner made it clear that his focus remains winning in Toronto.
The meeting, facilitated by NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, came as a relief to Leafs management amid ongoing roster and coaching decisions. Friedman, on his 32 Thoughts podcast, described the call as the first in-depth discussion between the sides and said it left both parties feeling “in a good place.”
Matthews recently underwent surgery, making an in-person meeting with Leafs brass in Arizona impractical. The timing of his recovery and the team’s busy schedule, coaching interviews and scouting meetings, also made a face-to-face conversation unlikely in the near future.
“Matthews has indicated that he wants to win in Toronto and that is the message that he has reiterated and that is what the organization is going with,” Friedman said, citing the outcome of the virtual meeting.
While the Leafs still have until July 15 to negotiate a contract extension with Matthews, the message is clear: he’s not shopping his services elsewhere. The 26-year-old has spent his entire seven-season NHL career in Toronto, tallying 268 goals and 535 points in 514 games. His most recent season saw him finish with 42 goals and 93 points, helping the Leafs reach the Stanley Cup Final.

With the Leafs currently in a state of transition, the stability of their star forward is crucial. The team also has Max Domi sidelined after complications from offseason surgery, adding urgency to the front office’s decisions.
For now, the Maple Leafs can focus on building around Matthews without the distraction of potential trade speculation. The next key date is July 15, the deadline for Matthews to sign a long-term contract or risk entering unrestricted free agency in 2027.
Until then, Toronto will continue its pursuit of a Stanley Cup, with its captain fully on board.
