Bruce Boudreau says the Toronto Maple Leafs coaching job isn’t a pressure cooker, it’s a dream come true for the right coach. Despite the team’s high expectations and media scrutiny, most NHL coaches see the Leafs as a golden opportunity. Boudreau, who has coached over 1,000 NHL games, says the job is about potential, not pressure.
The Maple Leafs have finished in the top three of the Atlantic Division in five of the past six seasons. Their roster features three players with 70+ points in the last two seasons: Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and Mitch Marner. That kind of talent is hard to ignore.
Bruce Boudreau said in a recent interview: “If you win in Toronto, you’re not just a good coach, you’re a legend.” The spotlight in Toronto is intense, but it can also elevate a coach’s career. That’s a draw for many in the coaching ranks.
Kris Knoblauch, a Canadian coach who has worked in the NHL and with Canada’s junior teams, is among those who see the Leafs job as a career-defining move. Canada’s hockey culture is strong, and coaching the Maple Leafs is seen as a national honor. The team plays in one of the most passionate markets in the NHL, Toronto averaged over 18,000 fans per game in 2024-25.
Coaching in Toronto isn’t easy. The Leafs haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967, the longest active championship drought in the top four North American pro sports leagues. But Boudreau argues that the job is fixable. “Good coaches believe they can fix things,” he said. “They don’t look at a roster and see 'stuck.' They see 'challenge.'"
The Leafs have made the playoffs in four of the last five seasons but have yet to reach the Conference Finals. Their 2025 playoff run ended in the first round, raising questions about team chemistry and coaching strategy.

Still, the Leafs remain a top draw in the NHL. Their 2025-26 season opener sold out in under an hour, and they ranked second in average attendance for the 2024-25 season. That kind of support is rare and powerful.
With the 2026 NHL Draft and free agency approaching, the Leafs will look to solidify their coaching staff. Boudreau’s comments suggest the team could attract top-tier candidates. The next coaching hire could shape Toronto’s future for years to come.
The Maple Leafs are expected to announce their coaching decision no later than June 1.

The Portland Trail Blazers have narrowed their head coaching search to five finalists including Boston Celtics assistant Tyler Lashbrook and Utah Jazz assistant Mike Williams. Marc Stein of The Stein Line reported that Lashbrook and Williams have advanced to the final stages of the process. The grou
