The Toronto Maple Leafs are now in the market for a new head coach after firing Craig Berube on Wednesday, opening up a coaching vacancy that could attract Kris Knoblauch. With Edmonton also expected to part ways with Knoblauch soon, speculation is growing that the 47-year-old could enter the race for the Leafs’ bench boss role.
New Maple Leafs GM John Chayka confirmed the team is casting a wide net in its search, emphasizing that experience in an NHL market could be a key factor. “We’re going to start very wide and talk to as many people as we can with varying backgrounds,” Chayka said. “Experience, certainly experience in the NHL in larger markets, could be an asset.”
Knoblauch has spent three seasons as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, compiling a regular-season record of 135-77-21 and a playoff mark of 31-22. He led the Oilers to back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2023-24 and 2024-25, coaching a team centered around prime stars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. His tenure in Edmonton, however, has been clouded by recent turmoil, despite a three-year extension signed in October.
Knoblauch’s experience with a high-pressure franchise like the Oilers could make him an attractive candidate for the Maple Leafs, who also operate in a major market with high expectations. He has worked closely with McDavid and Draisaitl, two of the most talented players in the league, and understands what it takes to lead a team in a playoff chase.

With the Oilers likely moving on from Knoblauch and the Leafs’ coaching search still in its early stages, it’s expected that Chayka and his staff will reach out to several candidates, including Knoblauch. The Maple Leafs are expected to finalize their coaching decision by the end of May.
