The Edmonton Oilers are on the verge of making a head coaching decision without securing their top target, Bruce Cassidy, and the parallels to their rushed Tristan Jarry trade are growing louder. With the Vegas Golden Knights unwilling to release Cassidy for an interview, the Oilers face a critical juncture in shaping their future, and the wrong choice could have lasting consequences.
The Oilers have already conducted an interview with Craig Berube, while Peter Laviolette appears to have set his sights on the Toronto Maple Leafs job. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights have made it clear they will not hand over Cassidy, despite interest from both Edmonton and the Los Angeles Kings. According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, “The NHL’s perspective is that Vegas is within its contractual rights to do what it’s doing with Cassidy and that it’s in line with established league policy.”
This situation mirrors the Jarry trade, which saw the Oilers act hastily when goaltending options dwindled. In a move that cost them both Brett Kulak and Stuart Skinner, the Oilers acquired Jarry in exchange for two key assets. The deal backfired, with Jarry posting a .908 save percentage and a 29-28-13 record in his first season with the team, far from the solution the Oilers envisioned.
GM Stan Bowman admitted the trade didn’t work out as planned, and now the Oilers are in a similar position with their coaching search. With the firing of Kris Knoblauch, reportedly influenced by leaked interest in Cassidy, the clock is ticking for a new hire.

The Oilers cannot afford another rushed decision. If Berube or Laviolette don’t feel right, the team must be willing to wait or consider a different route. Rumors about Mike Babcock or a second chance for a failed coach should be ignored outright, these are not viable solutions for a team with a $100 million cap hit driven largely by Connor McDavid’s contract.
The stakes are high. If the Oilers fail to build a competitive team, McDavid’s patience could wear thin, and free agents will continue to avoid Edmonton. With the new season just months away, the Oilers must get this decision right, or risk another costly misstep.

The Vegas Golden Knights have shattered the NHL’s unwritten rules this season, proving that winning a Stanley Cup can take precedence over tradition, optics, and risk management. By making bold coaching changes, embracing a physical identity, and acquiring players like Mitch Marner and Carter Hart,
