John Tortorella’s name is surfacing in the Edmonton Oilers’ coaching search, despite his impressive work with the Vegas Golden Knights in the Western Conference Final.
Tortorella, 67, was hired in mid-February to finish out the 2025-26 season and has led Vegas to an 8-4 playoff record so far. With the Golden Knights facing the Colorado Avalanche in a high-stakes series, his future beyond this season remains uncertain. Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman recently suggested that if Vegas doesn’t retain Tortorella, he could be a fit for Edmonton.
The Oilers are reportedly seeking a coach with a more demanding leadership style than previous hires Kris Knoblauch and Jay Woodcroft. Tortorella’s reputation as a tough but effective mentor fits that profile. His arrival in Vegas coincided with a 7-0-1 regular-season finish, and his coaching jolted a team that had underperformed expectations earlier in the year.
Friedman explained on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast: “I’ll tell you, I was listening to the end of Vegas-Anaheim on the radio and I was thinking if Vegas doesn’t keep John Tortorella, he might be a guy that fills kind of what they (the Oilers) want.”
Tortorella’s contract with Vegas does not extend beyond the current season, leaving room for other teams to pursue him. While names like Bruce Cassidy, Peter Laviolette, and Craig Berube remain more likely options for Edmonton, the idea of Tortorella in a Oilers sweater is gaining attention.

The Golden Knights are currently in the Western Conference Final, with Game 7 looming if the series reaches that point. If they win the Stanley Cup, the pressure on Vegas to keep Tortorella will increase. However, if they fall short, the Oilers could move quickly to pursue him.
Tortorella’s potential move to Edmonton would be a major storyline as the Oilers seek to reset their coaching staff and build toward a Stanley Cup contender. The next few weeks will be critical in determining his future.

As co-hosts of the tournament, the U.S. will be under intense scrutiny, and the question remains: how far must Pochettino take the tea
