The Edmonton Oilers are preparing for a pivotal coaching decision as John Tortorella's stint with the Vegas Golden Knights appears to be ending. With the Golden Knights eliminated from the 2026 Stanley Cup Finals, speculation is growing that the team will promote Ryan Craig from their AHL affiliate in Henderson to the top job. Tortorella, who was signed on an interim basis, is expected to exit his role by June 30, opening the door for new opportunities, including a potential return to the Oilers.
Tortorella’s coaching style has drawn comparisons to Mike Babcock and Bruce Cassidy, two names still in the Oilers’ coaching mix. While the team is currently seeking formal approval to hire Babcock, the NHL’s ongoing investigation into his past conduct remains a wildcard. If Babcock is denied the job, the Oilers could revisit their previous interest in Cassidy, or turn to Tortorella, who would be the only one of the three still available.
According to Jason Gregor and other insiders, the Golden Knights have never intended for Tortorella’s role to be long-term. “The one interesting rumour that hasn’t gone away is that Vegas will promote Ryan Craig from Henderson to Vegas as their head coach next year. Tortorella was only signed to the end of this season. Seems crazy that he might not return, but Vegas has always done it their way,” Gregor noted.
The Oilers have been vocal in their pursuit of Babcock, but the coaching landscape is shifting. If the NHL clears Babcock and the Oilers’ leadership group remains committed to him, Tortorella may never be considered. However, if the investigation casts doubt on Babcock’s hiring, the Oilers could pivot quickly.

Tortorella’s potential return to Edmonton is not just speculative, it’s a realistic possibility. The 66-year-old has a history with the team and has thrived in high-pressure playoff situations. The Golden Knights’ deep playoff run this season adds to his appeal. If he becomes available, the Oilers could move fast.
The timeline is tight. The NHL’s decision on Babcock is expected within the next two weeks. If no resolution is reached by June 30, the Oilers will be in direct contact with Tortorella. The next few weeks will determine who is behind the bench for the 2026-27 season.
