Max Domi will miss the start of the 2026-27 season due to complications from offseason surgery. The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Monday that the forward is out indefinitely and will be re-evaluated when training camp opens in mid-September.
Domi battled the injury throughout the 2025-26 season, a factor believed to have contributed to his inconsistent play at times. In 80 games last season he recorded 12 goals and 36 points while playing primarily in a bottom-six role. The gritty forward is known for his energy physicality and penalty-killing ability.
Domi’s absence creates a significant hole in Toronto’s forward depth heading into next season. The 31-year-old remains under contract for two more years with an average annual value of $3.75 million. His contract includes a 13-team no-trade list beginning with the 2026-27 season.
General manager John Chayka already had a busy summer planned. Now the Maple Leafs face added pressure to bolster their middle-six and bottom-nine groups. With Domi sidelined the team will need to address depth in the forward group ahead of training camp.
The veteran has been a consistent penalty-killing threat and physical presence for the Leafs. Last season Domi averaged 18:22 of ice time per game and played on the third line. His energy on the penalty kill and in the corners was a key part of Toronto’s identity last season.

The team did not disclose the nature of the complications that have extended Domi’s recovery timeline. However they remain optimistic he will be ready for the regular season once cleared.
Domi’s injury adds another layer of uncertainty to the Maple Leafs’ forward group. The team finished second in the Atlantic Division last season but failed to qualify for the playoffs. Rebuilding depth and chemistry remains a priority for Chayka.
The next update on Domi’s status will come when training camp opens in mid-September. At that point the team will provide a more detailed timeline for his return. Until then the Leafs will have to operate without one of their most physical forwards.

The Vegas Golden Knights have shattered the NHL’s unwritten rules this season, proving that winning a Stanley Cup can take precedence over tradition, optics, and risk management. By making bold coaching changes, embracing a physical identity, and acquiring players like Mitch Marner and Carter Hart,
