The Edmonton Oilers are considering a bold and controversial coaching option as they search for a new bench boss following the firing of Kris Knoblauch. Mike Babcock, the 62-year-old veteran with a storied but polarizing NHL coaching career, has surfaced in discussions as a potential candidate. Sources indicate the name gained traction during a recent episode of Oilers Now, where former NHL GM Brian Lawton suggested the move could be a calculated risk.
The Oilers are in the midst of a critical coaching search, with Bruce Cassidy’s status in Vegas still uncertain. The Golden Knights are reportedly waiting until the playoffs conclude, or possibly win the Stanley Cup, before granting permission for an interview. In the interim, Babcock has emerged as a surprising option, despite his complicated reputation.
Babcock’s resume is impressive. He led the Detroit Red Wings to a Stanley Cup in 2008 and guided Canada to Olympic gold in 2010 and 2014. He’s one of only a handful of coaches to achieve the Triple Gold Club, combining NHL, Olympic, and World Championship success. However, his career has been shadowed by controversy, including a resignation from the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2023 amid allegations of crossing personal boundaries with players.
Lawton, when asked on Oilers Now, acknowledged the possibility of a Babcock hire. “I would think so,” he said, drawing a parallel to Oilers GM Stan Bowman’s own return to the NHL. “Someone with Stan’s background would certainly have a lot of thoughts about that.”
Babcock’s potential return would be a high-stakes move for an Oilers team still in its championship window, centered around stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The risk is real: locker-room trust could be tested, and media scrutiny would be intense.

The coaching search remains fluid. While Babcock is being considered, the Oilers have also sought permission to speak with Craig Berube and are expected to talk to Peter Laviolette. Elliotte Friedman reported that John Tortorella could also be in the mix if he isn’t retained in Vegas.
With so many names in play and a Stanley Cup contender in the mix, the Oilers have until the Golden Knights decide on Cassidy’s fate. A decision is likely coming soon.
