The Edmonton Oilers are keeping a close eye on the NHL coaching landscape as two potential candidates emerge from the Golden Knights’ four-game sweep of the Colorado Avalanche. Jared Bednar and John Tortorella, both with Stanley Cup experience and playoff success, could become available in the coming weeks, offering the Oilers strong options to replace their current head coach.
Bednar, who led the Avalanche to a championship in 2022, is under scrutiny after the team was swept by Vegas in the first round. Colorado’s decision to move forward with Bednar could hinge on how they assess the season’s failure. Erik Johnson, a former Avalanche defenseman, noted that the team already made a dramatic move by trading Mikko Rantanen. If they don’t follow that with a coaching change, it could signal internal conflict. “I think Jared Bednar is one of the best coaches in the NHL and gets scooped up in a second if he gets fired,” Johnson said.
John Tortorella’s future is also in question. The Golden Knights hired Tortorella in mid-season with the goal of pushing them into the playoffs. Instead, he delivered a stunning run that led to a sweep of the Avalanche. His contract expires in early July, and while Vegas may want to extend him, it’s not guaranteed. Elliotte Friedman of The Athletic said, “What do you do here? Tortorella’s contract is up on June 30th. If Vegas isn’t extending him, we know Edmonton is waiting.”
Tortorella’s success in the playoffs has already drawn interest from other teams. Friedman added, “Maybe it’s not the Oilers, but somebody’s going to be looking at this and saying ‘Hey, if Vegas doesn’t want him, we’ll gladly take him.’” His coaching style, which emphasizes structure and accountability, has proven effective for teams in win-now mode. Kyle Bukauskas of The Athletic noted that Tortorella’s career trajectory aligns with teams like the Golden Knights and could also fit the Oilers’ current approach.

With two potential high-profile candidates in play, the Oilers are in a strong position to act quickly. If Bednar is let go or Tortorella isn’t re-signed, Edmonton could make a move before the July 1 NHL free agency deadline. The Oilers are looking for a coach who can build on their recent success and lead them into the next era. With both Bednar and Tortorella having proven themselves in high-pressure playoff situations, either would be a strong fit.
The next step will come in the coming weeks as the Golden Knights and Avalanche evaluate their futures. The Oilers will be watching closely, ready to move if the right opportunity presents itself.
