Sidney Crosby says he plans to take a year-by-year approach to his future contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but clarified that it is not a sign he is considering retirement. The Penguins' captain confirmed he intends to play for several more seasons and is focused on helping the team remain competitive. With one year left on his current contract, Crosby emphasized flexibility and team-first decision-making.
In an interview with The Athletic, Crosby explained that his short-term mindset allows both him and the Penguins to manage the salary cap and roster changes effectively. "It’s pretty obvious why I would just go year to year with the contracts," he said. "At the end of the day, I’m just going to do what’s best for the team. It’s got nothing to do with how long I want to play. It’s not like that at all."
Crosby remains one of the NHL’s most productive players, having just completed his 21st consecutive season with a point-per-game average. The 37-year-old is currently fifth on the NHL’s all-time scoring list with 1,952 points. If he continues at his current pace, he is projected to pass Jaromir Jagr’s 1,961 points within the next two seasons.
The Penguins are expected to enter contract extension talks with Crosby later this summer. With a cap hit of $8.7 million on a one-year deal, the Penguins would retain control while maintaining salary cap flexibility. General Manager Kyle Dubas has yet to begin formal discussions, but both sides are expected to work toward a short-term agreement.

Crosby’s focus remains on helping the Penguins contend. The team has returned to the playoffs after a three-year absence, and Crosby is motivated to build on that success. “I definitely want to keep playing for as many years as possible,” he said.
With the Penguins looking to build around their captain, the next step will be contract talks in the coming months. As the summer progresses, fans and analysts will watch closely to see if Crosby signs a one-year deal or pursues a longer-term solution. The Penguins have until July 1 to finalize any extension before free agency begins.
