Defenseman Troy Stecher wants to remain with the Toronto Maple Leafs after a breakout season that saw him become a key contributor on a struggling blue line. The 28-year-old, acquired via waivers from the Edmonton Oilers in December 2025, played 58 games for the Leafs and averaged 19:46 of ice time per game. He is now a pending unrestricted free agent and has expressed a desire to continue his career in Toronto.
Stecher’s performance exceeded expectations after a limited role in Edmonton. He was not a regular with the Oilers and was claimed off waivers with little fanfare. But in Toronto, he quickly earned trust from the coaching staff and played meaningful minutes on a defense unit that struggled to find consistency. His two-way play and physical presence made him a reliable option in key moments.
“I really had fun playing there. It’s a world-class organization,” Stecher said on Leafs Morning Take. “Who knows what’s going to happen here, obviously, in the offseason with all the changes that we had. I’ve said before, I’ll say it again: I hope I’m back.”
The Maple Leafs have had a summer of uncertainty, with several key decisions looming on the blue line. While Stecher was a surprise standout, his role is not necessarily as a top-four defenseman for an entire season. He played 58 games in a shortened season, and while his minutes were significant, the team may still look to upgrade the defense in the summer.
Stecher has had some conversations with the organization, but he has not confirmed the status of any offer. “I mean, I’m not going to say no. There obviously has been,” he said. “To what degree, I don’t know, that’s all on my agent.”

The Leafs have until July 1 to make a decision on Stecher, who is expected to be one of several defensemen in play as the team continues to reshape its roster. With the 2026 NHL Draft and free agency just weeks away, the Maple Leafs have plenty on their plate. Stecher is hopeful, but realistic.
At the end of the day, man, I’m hopeful to be a Leaf.
