Boston Bruins general manager Don Sweeney is reportedly in early discussions with the New Jersey Devils about a blockbuster trade centered on young blueliners Simon Nemec and Mason Lohrei. With both teams looking to reshape their defense, a deal could bring a top-6 defenseman to the Bruins while giving the Devils a promising young piece in return.
The 22-year-old Simon Nemec, New Jersey’s second-overall pick in the 2022 draft, is the focal point of the talks. In 68 games last season, Nemec tallied 11 goals and 26 points, proving his offensive instincts and potential as a top-four defender. While he has not officially requested a trade, sources suggest he is entering restricted free agency on July 1 and could be open to a move.
For Boston, Nemec would replace an underperforming right-shot defenseman like Andrew Peeke or Henri Jokiharju. The Bruins have shown little interest in re-signing Peeke and are actively seeking a right-shot defender who can impact the game in all zones. Nemec fits that mold.
Mason Lohrei, a 20-year-old left-shot defenseman, is being floated as Boston’s potential return. Lohrei, who has 12 points in 56 games over two seasons, is seen as a high-upside prospect who could thrive in a more consistent top-pairing role in New Jersey.
Nick Goss of NBC Sports confirmed the trade chatter, writing: “One possibility is a Simon Nemec trade with the New Jersey Devils.” While Goss noted conflicting reports about Nemec’s trade request, the Bruins are clearly exploring the scenario.

The Devils could benefit from moving Nemec before his RFA deadline, using Lohrei and potentially another asset to bolster their depth. Boston, meanwhile, could gain a top-6 defenseman who can play alongside Hampus Lindholm or Nikita Zadorov.
With the Bruins holding cap space and the Devils looking to reshape their defense, the timing is right for a deal. While no agreement has been reached, the framework is in place for a trade that could reshape both teams’ blue lines.
The July 1 RFA deadline looms large, giving both teams a clear window to finalize a deal before the market shifts.
